Not the greatest shot, but included by virtue of the rarity of the type on the line... 31602 is propelling Having departed Bathgate at 10.15 on 26 May 2009, the 08.19 Mossend-Mossend Radio survey train passes through Livingston with 31602 leading.

]]> Wed Nov 25 2009 DMUs on the Bathgate branch http://scottishrailpics.fotopic.net/c1784376.html When it became clear work was due to commence on the Airdrie - Bathgate project, I decided I'd better attempt to take a few shots of the day to day scene before the overhead wires arrived and did what they've done elsewhere - ruin the shot... These are a selection of the results obtained in decent conditions - they also show some of the changes as the works continued. Ex Hull Trains Class 170 leaves Livingston North bound for Edinburgh on 26 July 2007, seen at Camps Rigg, Livingston By the time I got another shot (in decent light) the overbridge used for the location had been closed for several months for rebuilding, so this was the scene on 6 May 2008 A Bathgate service approaches Livingston North on 22 August 2007 with the line looking pretty much as it had since it was singled here in 1986. 23 October 2007 and part of the new down line is evident although not it position - it had been laid to serve as a loop line for engineering trains during a blockade, as 170454 slows for the stop at Livingston North was actually a good spot for a shot here when the line was in the middle of the old formation - 158711 appears to be running wrong line here on 23 September 2008 The new down line was opened in October 2008, as 158701 passes heading for Bathgate on the 27th. The angle is altered on this and the previous image to avoid a newly installed GSM-R mast. Also here is a very annoyingly positioned tree which (with a mirror plant at the opposite side of the bridge) limited the angle onto the new line. Not that it matters now of course, as there are some new catenary masts here which - yes - have to say the least 'altered the vantage point' somewhat.... A 158 glides past the sleepers in position for the new down line on 10 June 2008 First of a series of shots of Edinburgh bound services calling at Livingston North on 6 May 2008 170453 slows for the stop. Already the cutting has been widened and ballast is down on the new down formation By 23 June 2008 more progress is evident as 158719, still in its Natex Scotrail livery pauses with the 09.25 service ex Bathgate Alphaline liveried 158870 calls with the 10.25 ex-Bathgate on 21 July 2008 Plenty activity on the new platform as 158731 sits on 2 September 2008 22 September 2008 sees 158703 on the 08.55 ex Bathgate I wasn't intentionally going after the 158 fleet, but once again it's a 'Scud' as 158726 pauses on 2 October 2008 158721, 08 October 2008 The 158 monopoly is changed as 170455 calls with the 09.55 ex Bathgate on 08 October 2008 By 27 October 2008 the new down platform was open, as 158782 calls with the 11.25 ex Bathgate 158734, 25 November 2008 Certain services are booked for two units during the day, which tends to look a little better than a single two car unit photographically (although it's not unheard of that when it's good weather a single unit turns up) - but on 1 June 2009 an Edinburgh service pulls away from Livingston North. This shot is now gone with the installation of catenary masts on the down side. 158708 calls on 20 April 2009 Alphaline liveried 158868 calls with the 10.55 Bathgate - Edinburgh service on 11 may 2009 Just east of where the previous shot was taken, one of the various hired-in units operated by Scotrail in recent times, Central liveried 156403 heads for Edinburgh on 14 September 2007 Onto Bathgate as an early afternoon service leaves for Edinburgh in the charge of 170450. 16 February 2008 A pair of 158s leave Bathgate on 22 February 2008. The STVA compound on the left (the former Bathgate yard) is still crammed with new vehicles - although at this point it had been some time since any had arrived by rail. The railway will once more occupy the old yard site with the construction of a depot for the Electrics which will operate the reopened line. 1 March 2008 sees Bathgate branch regular, Pioneer unit 158701 leave the Town with a service for Edinburgh 22 April 2008 and 158734 passes the Council depot at Guildiehaugh with an Edinburgh service. This shot is still more or less on for the time being although the scene is much altered with new lines and sidings (not to mention catenary). Some tree clearance has taken place and ballast delivered as 158867 in Alphaline livery passes the STVA compound on 13 May 2008 Unbranded silver 158782 just about to pass under Rennie's bridge as it arrives in Bathgate on 13 May 2008. This shot was impossible for a while due to trees blocking the view, but fortunately a small opportunity arose when the A-B works started and the chainsaws moved in. The following day, 14 May, another branch regular 158714 arrives in Bathgate And with the sun out a shot of the same train heading back to Edinburgh 14 May 2008 sees 158728 getting up to speed 170455 is the unit on 22 May 2008 - the SVA yard still contains a few new cars.... It's quite surprising just how often non Scotrail liveried 158s turn up on the Edinburgh/Bathgate/Dunblane turns, but at least it gives a little variety. 158867 is about to pass the site of the long gone Dechmont siding as it heads for Edinburgh on 22 October 2008. Once again, with the installation of overhead electrification, this shot is no longer possible. 26 may sees 170456 heading out of town 9 June 2009. Alphaline 158869 leaves Bathgate. Not long after, Rennie's bridge (from where the shots were taken) was permanently removed. The area would then see the construction of the new Bathgate LMD and station commence as part of the Airdrie - Bathgate project. Not many shots here in decent light prior to this (also due to a missing footbridge) as pioneer 158 number 701 heads toward the site of Bangour Jct (between Livingston North and Uphall) on the 10th June 2008. The track is still single at this point, while the bridge in the background has been replaced and the cutting has received attention. 26 May 2009 as an Alphaline liveried pair of 158s take the 09.55 ex Bathgate east toward it's next stop at Uphall. As elsewhere, the catenary has now arrived here - although perhaps fortunately the masts are on the up side of the line. At the moment the contact wires are not installed, but it may be possible to get a shot of sorts here from a lower level once the wires are live.
